Family Services received $2,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents.  Family Services will use the gift to support women and children who have sought refuge at the Family Services Women’s Shelter as a result of domestic violence.

“We are grateful to Food Lion for giving hope to women and children who are working to overcome the trauma of a family violence situation. This gift helps Family Services provide essential resources and a safe haven in which these families can look to a better future with hopefulness,” Joetta Shepherd, director of the Safe Relationships division at Family Services.

More than 200 people, 100 of whom are often children, are supported at the Family Services shelter each year.   During an average stay of 20 days, clients receive safety, support, and resources in order to rebuild their lives and start over free from the threat of violence.

Originally established as the Shelter for Battered Women, the Family Services Women’s Shelter has provided immediate safety and confidential support since 1985 and was one of the first such facilities operated in North Carolina.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
