Sarah Young Austin — the former head of Family Services  who improved the lives of hundreds of families, battered women, and poor children over a decades-long career — died Thursday at age 88. Austin, who joined Family Services in 1951 before retiring as president in 1994, worked with pregnant unmarried women, helping to place their babies with families who wanted to adopt a child. Over the years, she placed about 400 babies. Austin enjoyed a state and national reputation for her tireless work.
